Classes

RA Aikido is offered in beginner and intermediate/advanced classes, twice a week, with a supplemental practice session on Saturday mornings.

Beginner classes focus on core aikido techniques including basic rolls, falls, hand-escapes, and basic strikes and grabs. Students are encouraged to participate according to their ability and fitness level.

Intermediate/advanced classes build on the skills acquired in beginner classes by introducing the full range of techniques within the RA Aikido curriculum.  This includes judo and jujitsu style throws and grappling, along with traditional Japanese weaponry.

All students may participate in the supplemental Saturday morning practice session.

A typical class might consist of

  • warm-up exercises (stretching, rolling, falling),
  • practicing techniques (demonstration by instructor followed by repetition in pairs or small groups),
  • randori (group practice involving multiple attackers, random attacks and dynamic defences), and
  • cool-down exercises.
