The RA Duplicate Bridge Club

The RA Duplicate Bridge Club is a ACBL-affiliated club within the non-profit Civil Service Recreational Association and is run by its members. You do not have to be a civil servant to join, and you don't have to join to play - but membership does have its privileges.

Library books

The RA Duplicate Bridge Club has a lending library for members of over 200 bridge books - see the list of Library books. The Ottawa Public Library also has Bridge Books

Playing

We run many games every week, cost:$2.50/members, $5/non-members(coffee, tea included at evening games). Charity, Fund, STaC, and ACBL-wide games cost a little extra - but you earn more ACBL Master Points. We also offer discounts to members who attend the AGM.

All games are at the RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Dr., just east of Bronson Av. in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Parking is free. The RA is about 7 minutes walk from the Billings Bridge Transit Station and just off the bike path along the S side of the Rideau River. See the Location Map. When you enter the building, ask where the Bridge Club is playing.

Games are usually about 24 boards. See the Schedule / Results page for games, results, and news. We publish results and hand records online and use table scorers for quick results.

Need a partner? - not a problem!

Arrange a partner by emailing Tony Edwards, Tournament Director or call him at (613)820-2984 well ahead of time -preferably days, not hours, to find a compatible(e.g. systems) partner. If you arrive 15 minutes early, you are guaranteed a partner (the director will play if necessary) unless an extra half-table would be created and there are fewer than 7 table and it is a "Mitchell" movement (pairs do not switch between NS and EW). (The purpose is to avoid creating a 4-board sitout.) Most sessions have 10-15+ tables.

Electronic Table Scorers

Bridgemate II table scorer Bridgemate II display

We now have 40 BridgeMate II scorers to speed and display scoring - it acts like an electronic "traveller" sheet, but it stays at each table.

The “OK” button turns it on. It turns off by itself when idle.

Typo errors can easily be corrected. Pressing the Cancel button erases the last entry and functions like a backspace key. By pressing this key multiple times, you can erase all the entered data of the current board.

At session start, depending on the custom settings, it asks first for entry of player numbers or will start with the first round.

At the start of each round, the Bridgemate will display the new round and the expected pairs and direction of play and which boards to play. Check that these are right before you play. North makes the entries. East verifies that entries are correct.

For each deal, North enters the board number & presses OK. When the board number is accepted, players start the bidding.

After the bidding the contract and the declarer are entered. Optionally you can also include the lead card.

After the play, North enters the result. Then Bridgemate shows a message that East/West must now verify the result. If there is a mistake, East presses Cancel to delete the mistake and enters the correct result. When the result is correct, East presses OK and then the Accept "soft" key to validate it and the information will be sent wirelessly to the TD's computer. ("Soft" keys are the four blank keys just under the screen. Their function is indicated on the screen just above when needed.)

Passed-Out: If the players have passed four times without offering a contract, enter 'Pass' at CONTR(act) and confirm with OK. You will not be asked for the lead card and the result, and the Bridgemate will switch immediately to the verification screen. If a player has passed out, call 911.

Unplayed: If a board has not been played in a particular round (e.g. due to time constraints), press the 10 key for CONTRact. The screen will now display the text NO PLAY. Confirm by pressing OK. The Bridgemate will now display the verification screen again. The Bridgemate will not display an overview for unplayed boards as it is possible to play the board later. The board can be played afterwards without the Bridgemate.

After East has confirmed the board result, players may have the option to view their result so far and the board scores at previous tables. Depending on the Bridgemate settings, the following information can be displayed:

  • Achieved percentage for the entered board result
  • Overview of scores of other pairs on the entered board
The percentage is shown directly after the board result has been transmitted to the server. The server calculates the percentage so far for each pair. Press OK to exit the screen.

If enabled, the scores of other pairs on the board are now shown. The scores are shown as a frequency list, indicating the number of times a result has been recorded. The first score is the highest N/S achieved score so far. The up and down "soft" keys can be used to move to the next or previous set of results.

At the end of the round, for Howell movements, follow the pair movement instructions.

At the end of the last round, the message End of Session appears. The Bridgemate may be set to offer players their personal game summary. In the ranking screen, press the GAME SUMMARY "soft" key. (It is visible only when the entire session is finished.)

Membership

The seniors club and the regular club amalgamated in 2007. Anyone can play, but to enjoy reduced fees, free tournament entries and library access, you must be a member of the RA, and then a member of the Bridge Club. Membership in the RA is reasonable, especially for current or retired federal civil servants and brings you access to many other RA activities, programs, and facilities. RA membership runs Sep to Aug.

Join and play the majority of games in any series between tournaments and you will get free passes for a game at local tournaments or free RA game entries. The RA's frequent player policy is available here.

For further information on joining (e.g. costs), contact Sharron Malott at 613-733-5100.

Club Executive

The RA Duplicate Bridge Club Executive welcomes your suggestions or questions. email or call Brian Lamarre at 613-739-7367. Join the executive and get $1 off each game.

Contract Bridge

New to bridge?

The club would like to personally welcome you and your partner(s) to the fine game of bridge. Not only is it fun and the sport of kings (at least modern kings like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet), but it keeps your mind young and agile. You can play bridge for your entire life, even if you are disabled or blind. It doesn't matter what language you speak - we use bidding boxes.

Want bridge lessons?

You can use this free Windows bridge intro/program to introduce yourself to Bridge.

Every Wednesday morning at 9:15 Heather Peckett has a “chalk talk” on an aspect of bridge bidding or play for players with less than 600 masterpoints. Come, learn, get your questions answered.
