Archery
2009-2010

Archery, one of the oldest forms of target shooting, is one of the original Olympic sports. The RA has one of the largest indoor facilities in Eastern Ontario and is recognized as Ottawa’s premier indoor range.

Adult Club

The Archery Club is for experienced archers who have their own equipment and who have a good understanding of archery technique. Inexperienced adult archers must complete the Level 1 course (or equivalent) and are encouraged to take the Level 2 class either before or when they join the club. The Club provides open shooting time (standard distance of 18 m) and hosts International Archery Federation (FITA) I and II tournaments throughout the year. The Club is strictly target shooting oriented and does not permit broadhead arrows, glue on or push on points. The maximum allowable draw weight for bows to be used at the range is 60 lbs. The principal club shooting times are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Saturday mornings until noon and Sundays all day. Weekday shooting may be available pending range availability. Note: This facility is shared by the Golf & Archery programs. Refer to class schedules for these activities to identify times the facility is not available for Archery Club Members.

Season: September to August
Fee: $175 RA member

Junior Club
Junior archers (ages 8 and up) who have their own equipment and who have completed both the Level 1 and 2 instructional programs (or equivalent) can join the Archery Club provided they have a good understanding of Archery technique and the endorsement of their instructor. Juniors 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult and can shoot any time the range is open for practice. Club members can register for the Junior CANBOW Program (multi level progressive badge program) which is available on Sunday afternoons between 4 and 6 pm (except on holidays). Participants can utilize the class equipment during this supervised session at no extra charge, however nominal fees shall apply to cover the cost of badges and targets at each level of this program. Canbow is available to all Junior Club Archers under the age of 21 from September to June.

Season: September to August
Fee: $100 RA member

Instructional Programs
Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 programs are offered
Equipment is provided for Level 1 & Level 2
Inexperienced archers must take part in the lesson program and must achieve a good understanding of archery technique, as well as demonstrate a respect for safety before joining the Club. Level 1 and Level 2 classes are offered using RECURVE BOWS (supplied), as per the schedule below. Equipment is provided for Level 1 & Level 2 classes, however club members must have their own equipment. (Exception: class equipment is available during the supervised Canbow session, Sundays between 4 and 6 p.m. for Junior Club Members) Classes are available to Juniors (8 yrs and older), Families (parent and child), or Adults. Class schedule is subject to change pending demand in each level. Early registration is strongly encouraged as demand for these classes is high.

Level 1
All classes are one hour in length. The six-week Level 1 program emphasizes safety and covers the fundamentals of recurve target archery. Archers are taught the 10 steps of the archery shot: stance, nocking, bow hand, string hand, pre-draw, anchor, aim, release, follow-through and relax. Archers will have a good working knowledge of archery and will be prepared for further development in the sport.
