In exploring career paths, have you considered a future in skilled trades? To quote Mike Holmes, Canadian builder and television host, “Think outside the cubicle”.

Without trades, our society would literally crumble. Trades jobs are well-paying, creative, respected and challenging, and provide a career job security higher than most other fields, along with a satisfaction in seeing the results of your skills and abilities unfold in real time.

In January, the Ontario Provincial government shared estimates that there will be a shortage of 350,000 people required for skilled trades by 2025, and, according to a report by RBC, more than 700,000 skilled tradespeople are set to retire across the country.

Optimum Mechanical is proud Partner of the RA, and exclusive provider of mechanical services for the facility. They are dedicated to the delivery of quality service and to supporting young people in their decision to make a career in skilled trades.

Trades Career Path Bursary Program

The RA and Optimum Mechanical have teamed up to create the Trades Career Path Bursary Program. For 2022, two $500 bursaries will be awarded to assist two young people in moving forward with their education and/or training.

• Algonquin College or other post-secondary institution
• a certified apprenticeship program

Application Deadline: Friday, July 29, 2022 11:59PM

To be considered for the Trades Career Path Bursary Program, applicants must be:

• Applying to a skilled trades program or in a registered apprenticeship program in the National Capital Region
• Between the ages of 17 and 21 as of January 1, 2022

If applicable the following factors are beneficial to include in the application:

• A current or former athlete
• A current or former RA camp counsellor
• A current or former camp counsellor
• A current or past member at the RA

Applicants must submit the following:

• A completed and signed Applicant Information Form including the Release and Publicity Agreement, and application package before the deadline of Friday, July 29, 2022 at 11:59pm;
• A short essay (up to 500 words) describing the applicant’s experience with sport and recreation, their desire for an education related to skilled trades, and how the bursary funds will be used if they were the successful applicant;
• A personal reference from a person who is not a family member;
• A reference from the community (such as coach, team manager, volunteer coordinator etc.); and
• A copy of the applicant’s acceptance to skilled trades program or registration as an apprentice.
