COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination Requirement - FAQs 

The Ontario Government announced that starting September 22, 2021, they will require patrons of some non-essential businesses and settings to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination status to gain access. These businesses and settings include gyms and sports venues such as the RA.

As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will abide by all Public Health orders and we continue to support all efforts to keep people safe and keep our doors open.

We practice and expect respect and kindness. These are challenging times. The new government-mandated vaccine verification rules are not created by the RA and are expected to be followed by all sport and fitness facilities, not just us. While we respect some may hold different views on these government regulations, harassment towards our staff, volunteers, members or guests serves no one, and will not be tolerated. The consequence of non-compliance of rules or processes or harassment of any kind is suspension of or revocation of membership or access privileges at the RA Centre and provincial fines beginning at $750 for individuals and $10,000 for businesses. 


  1. Is the RA requiring vaccines for all program/club/league/activity participants?
    Following the Province mandate the RA will require proof of vaccine from all program/club/league/activity participants who are 12+ years old (with limited accommodations – see FAQ #9). The new government-mandated vaccine verification rules are not created by the RA and are expected to be followed by all indoor Sport and Recreational Fitness Facilities, not just us. Read the Province of Ontario's Using your Vaccination Receipt FAQs.

    We are leading by example - The RA have launched a mandatory vaccine policy for staff that will help to ensure the RA Centre is a secure place for the community we serve. This requirement is aimed at ensuring that we prioritize the health and safety of our staff, members, volunteers and guests.

  2. Why have you limited the entrance to the West doors only?
    The RA building is large with multiple access points and serves diverse user groups all under one roof. To obey the legislated provincial proof of vaccination policy we needed to find a way to better control access with our available resources. Please contact RA Member Services at 613-733-5100 to discuss any required accessibility/mobility accommodations.

  3. Why do I need to show my proof of vaccination each and every time?
    With the number of members and guests accessing the facility on a daily basis, it is unfair to expect that the rotating staff know who has already shown proof of vaccination. The guidance that we have received from the province does not permit businesses to retain any information provided by the individual as proof of vaccination so it is important that the verification process is applied consistently and fairly.

  4. Why is the RA not doing an “express-pass”
    Although we are aware that some single activity businesses have chosen to create their own modified express-pass system, with such a diverse group of users all under one roof and in the absence of an integrated Provincial vaccine confirmation system, our process can not be as straightforward.

  5. Where do I get my proof of vaccination/Ontario Vaccination Passport?
    Members can access proof of vaccinations by visiting the Ontario Health COVID-19 webpage (Ontario Health) and either downloading and printing their enhanced vaccination receipt with QR code or both vaccination receipts, or storing them on a smartphone device to present as proof of vaccination.

  6. Are we accepting Québec QR codes as proof of vaccination for our members who live in QC? (updated 10-01-2021)
    Yes – all members and guests who are residents of Québec can either provide the digital proof of vaccination containing their personal information, the vaccines they have received, and their QR code or a paper copy of their vaccination receipts. ID with a date of birth must also be shown.

  7. Is the QR code feature on the “Grassroots” utility acceptable as digital proof of vaccination? (updated 10-07-2021)
    This “grassroots” utility created by volunteers converts Ontario vaccination receipt into a pass inside iOS Wallet and also has a QR code feature. While impressive and a creative option that serves as a stop-gap utility for finding and displaying vaccination receipts until the Ontario government launches its standardized, provincially recognized passport system on October 22, RA staff will still be required to view the information listed below the QR code to actually validate proof of vaccination status.

  8. Proof of Vaccines-vaccination outside of Ontario or Canada (updated 10-01-2021)
    Access will be granted to individuals who arefully immunized (defined as any individual >14 days after receiving their second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series or their first dose of a one-dose COVID-19 vaccine series (i.e., Johnson and Johnson) even if their vaccinations are from outside Ontario or Canada. Documentation must be in French or English or a certified translation into French or English. 

  9. Are we offering accommodations for participants who can’t be vaccinated?
    The RA will comply with human rights laws and accommodate individuals who are legally entitled to an exemption. The exemptions will meet the requirements under Regulation 364/20 provided the Province and Ministry of Health. Please contact RA Member Services at 613-733-5100 to confirm whether the Association can meet your expectations. Access will not be granted until the individual receives confirmation that they can be accommodated.  

  10. What vaccines are being accepted?
    All Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccines will be accepted. This includes mRNA vaccines (ie: Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) and viral vector-based vaccines (ie: AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD and Janssen – Johnson & Johnson).

  11. Is a mix of two different vaccines okay?

  12. Are there any people accessing RA programs or visiting the RA Centre who will not have to demonstrate proof of vaccination?
    Mandatory vaccination requirement applies to all participants and visitors who are 12 years of age and over. There are certain groups who are not eligible for vaccination or who may not have had full access to vaccines. Among those eligible for exemption are the following groups:
    – Children under 12 years of age
    – Participants under 18 years of age who are entering our premises for sports and recreational fitness activities solely to participate in an organized sport including training, practices and games. We reserve the right to ask for ID to confirm age.

  13. What if I don’t want to disclose my vaccination status?
    It is the discretion of the individual to determine whether they would like to disclose their vaccination status. Should they make the decision not to divulge this information, they will not be permitted to access settings that require proof of vaccination.

  14. Is a recent negative test sufficient to attend if you are unvaccinated?
    A negative COVID-19 test or recent COVID-19 infection will not entitle a person to enter the RA Centre.
