MONDAY OCTOBER 10, 2022:

The RA Centre will be open 8am to 4pm on Thanksgiving.

Did you know?

Wheelchair curling is for people who are non-ambulant or able to walk only short distances, and who usually require a wheelchair for daily mobility.

There is no sweeping in wheelchair curling. Each throw requires a high level of accuracy.

Wheelchair curling was introduced as a Paralympic medal sport in 2006 and Canada won the first three gold medals in 2006, 2010, and 2014.

In PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Canada’s wheelchair curling team won the bronze medal.

WHEELCHAIR CURLING AT THE RA

We are immensely proud that the RA is the only curling club in Ottawa that integrates wheelchair curlers with able-bodied curlers in league play. You can find out more about our various leagues here and read the RA’s commitment to creating a culture of inclusivity and diversity here.

In addition, this Fall we have launched in partnership with the Ontario Curling Council (OCC) and Ottawa Valley Curling Association (OVCA) a new Pathway for Wheelchair Curlers (TRY, LEARN & PLAY).

NEW! Learn-To-Curl - Wheelchair Curling

We are excited to launch our new 10-week instructional program dedicated to the sport of wheelchair curling. This program is the first of its kind in the Ottawa region and is offered in partnership with the Ottawa Valley Curling Association (OVCA). Thank you OVCA for you support in this new initiative!

About the program

The purpose of “Learn Wheelchair Curling” is to have fun while gaining an appreciation for the fundamentals of curling. Guided by fully-trained instructors, coaches and supported by curling club volunteers, participants will explore the strategies of the game and learn to deliver a rock from a stationary wheelchair. The program is based on a curriculum developed by Curling Canada.

After completing the program, wheelchair curlers can continue to develop their skills throughout the curling season by joining various leagues at the RA Curling Club – days or evenings or both.

Prerequisites for this program are as followed:

  • have your own wheelchair
  • be able to propel your wheelchair independently without assistance, both on the ice and up and down a ramp to the ice surface
  • have the upper-body strength and flexibility needed to push curling rocks, either with a delivery stick or by leaning over the side of your wheelchair

*Equipment is included and available for use during the program
