This two-hour training seminar is designed specifically for youth aged 6-10 years old to learn in a safe and fun manner basic self-defence skills from the traditional Korean martial art of Hapkido. The program will integrate games and life-skills training with technical instruction.
What skills will you learn?
Our skills training is designed for a situation in which an assailant poses a threat and initiates the attack – none of the skills taught will teach the participant to square off and fight. During the seminar, students will work with the instructor and helpers, and practice with each other.
Potential assailants often seek a target that appears vulnerable so these simple but effective techniques will help children deter or minimize the risk of attack. This session will teach participants to become more aware of uncomfortable or dangerous situations and be proactive in their self-defence through communication and self-composure. The program will expand and reinforce existing communication skills taught in schools and at home.

Requirements: Light athletic clothes (long sleeves preferable) and a water bottle. We train in bare feet.
Hapkido, a traditional martial art originating from Korea, means “the way of coordinated power.” Hapkido uses soft-style circular principles that can be used by anyone and at any time, regardless of size, age, gender or physical ability.
By learning to turn an attacker’s strength and momentum into a defensive advantage, every student can utilize Hapkido’s principles with confidence and success. The skills learned in Hapkido not only teach self-defence, but also cultivate balance, self-esteem, tolerance, and control.
Hapkido’s ruthless techniques are defensive in nature and its practice is non-competitive – training focuses on the effective application of techniques to prepare for live situations. The martial art is composed of a variety of highly effective kicks and strikes, as well as joint locks, nerve and pressure point attacks, throws, and ground defence while its goal is to simply deter or subdue an attacker.
About Master Matthew Bock, 3rd Dan
After starting his martial arts training in a remote region of western China in 2002, Matthew returned to Prince George, British Columbia, where he met Grand Master Michael Forster, an 8th degree (dan) instructor and founder of the Korean Hapkido Institute. In 2007, Matthew was awarded his 1st dan in the style of Sung Moo Kwan Hapkido. Matthew had become deeply involved in the Hapkido community assisting and instructing youth.
From 2008-2010, Matthew lived in Seoul, South Korea, to undertake advanced training under Grand Master Kim Hyung Sang, the Vice President and Senior Evaluator for the Korean Hapkido Federation, Hapkido’s official governing body. Often training 6-7 hours per day, Matthew completed his 2nd and 3rd dan in the style of Eul Ji Kwan, and also founded an English-language Hapkido program for children.
While in South Korea, Matthew had the privilege of being the first foreigner to be an accepted member of the national demonstration team. After training with Masters from all over South Korea, Matthew was invited to participate at various martial arts demonstration events.
During 2010-11, Matthew taught at the UBC Hapkido Club, which is an affiliate of the Hapkido Institute in Prince George. Along with regular classes, Matthew also taught advanced classes, including black-belt preparation. In 2013-14, while living in Jakarta, Indonesia, Matthew founded a Hapkido program for both Indonesians and expats, and held self-defence seminars for children. Finally, Matthew is an examiner for Hapkido testing with experience with black belt gradings.
Matthew is originally from British Columbia. In terms of education, he has a MA from the University of British Columbia and a BA from the University of Northern British Columbia. Along with his extensive Hapkido training, Matthew has had training in sword, long staff, boxing, kick-boxing, and jujitsu. Matthew works as a senior policy analyst with the Government of Canada. He enjoys skiing, fishing and camping as well as taking advantage of Ottawa’s wonderful access to world-class visual arts and dance.
