(Ottawa, ON)

To mark this year’s RBC Sports Day in Canada on November 29, 2014, a national celebration of sport, the Recreation Association of the Public Service of Canada (commonly known as the RA) is hosting Open House at the RA. This event is a celebration and invitation for the community of Ottawa to try a variety of sport and fitness activities. The RA offers over 50 activities in 25 sport, recreation and fitness clubs and programs, plus a range of adult sport leagues in hockey, soccer, basketball, softball, ball hockey, curling and volleyball.
“As the largest not-for-profit Association in Ottawa we are thrilled to play a role in getting our community residents moving and active,” says Tosha Rhodenizer, CEO of the RA, “Our members are socially active, they enjoy competitive opportunities that encourage striving for excellence, they want to do it in a safe, fair, respectful and inclusive environment. Our members enjoy staying healthy, but having fun while they are doing it!”
Open House at the RA will offer the public access to the RA Centre, the RA’s flagship facility located at 2451 Riverside Drive and at the Rideau Tennis Club located at 1 Donald Street. The public will have full day access to the LifeFIT Centre to access training and fitness equipment. During Sports Day in Canada many of the sport clubs will be offering information sessions or open opportunities to try the sport with professional coaches available for introductions. “Sport has the power to build community and get Canadians moving,” said Elio Antunes, President and CEO of ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada. “Fostering opportunities for sport at both local and national levels allows us to build a better and stronger society, while also becoming more physically active leading to healthier, more active lifestyles.”
RBC Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of more than 1,800 local events and activities across Canada, such as community-wide festivals, try-it days, open houses, games, competitions, meet-and-greets, tournaments, fun runs, spectator events and pep rallies, and concludes with a special broadcast on CBC Television on November 29.
“Children need every opportunity to develop the confidence and skills they need to enable them to play and also recognizing there are lifelong lessons gained through sport,” said Jane Broderick, Chief Brand and Communications Officer, RBC. “RBC Sports Day in Canada is part of our larger commitment to kids and youth through the RBC Believe in Kids Pledge, a five-year, $100 million promise to help one million kids with a wide range of programs.”
