Badminton at the RA

The RA Badminton Club (RABC) has long been a community where new and old friends connect in this timeless sport. Young or old, competitive or recreational, all players have a place at the RA. You will be joining some of Canada’s top ranked Badminton players who are proud to call the RA Badminton Club their home club.

Our Badminton facility is open to all! Individuals wishing to participate in Badminton may do so by:
Joining the RA Badminton Club and gaining access to specific play times, club tournaments and social events.
OR
​Taking advantage of court rentals, clinics and registered ladder programs as either a Member of the Club or non-member

OUR FACILITY
Operating out of the only dedicated badminton facility in the region, club programs and training are supervised by Badminton Professional Mike Bitten and his team of coaches. The coaching team is comprised of former members of national, international and Olympic team players. Their decades of extensive playing experience, coupled with various levels of national coaching certification, guarantee an exceptional level of professional service with your participation.

Pay-As-You-Play Courts
​One hour “court rental” is open to the GENERAL PUBLIC, RA Badminton Club Members and RA members for a fee.

Juniors (12 to 17 years) are welcome (and may book a court) but must be accompanied by an adult 18+. 

PAY-AS-YOU-PLAY COURT RENTAL FEES & RULES
  • $20 per court (includes HST)
    Maximum 5 players per court (includes 1 spare)
  • One person will book court and pay full court fee ($20)
  • Courts may be booked up to 7 days in advance
  • RA Members Services must be notified 48 hours prior to your reservation if you need to cancel or reschedule. Otherwise, the court fee will charged without a credit.
  • All participants are required to leave the court once the one hour time period is over. This allows the next group to start and avoid any confusion
  • An extra charge ($20 per player) will be applied to any participants who use any vacant court before or after their booking time
  • No formal coaching can be done on a court rental unless authorized by the Head Pro
  • No refunds. Credits will be given for bookings cancelled at least 48 hours prior to your reservation.

Training, Clinics & Ladder programs
SUNDAY WOMEN’S LADDER PROGRAM
Sunday mornings  |  11:00am to 1:00pm
The Sunday Women's ladder promotes competitive play and allows players to gauge their proficiency in comparison to others. Participants move up or down the ladder based on their weekly performance. Participants registering must be at the intermediate-advanced level.  Feather bird players only.  No drop ins, registration only.

WINTER Session: January 8 to April 2, 2023 
SPRING Session: April 16 to June 25, 2023 

FEE:  
RA Member: $100/ session
RA Non-member: $120/ session

SUNDAY MEN’S LADDER PROGRAM
Sunday afternoons  |  1:00pm to 3:00pm

SOCIAL MORNING BADMINTON MEMBERSHIP
Looking for a fun social group to join? Our Social morning badminton membership is the right option for you! This membership provides all levels of play in a fun social atmosphere. Come with a friend or on your own!

Tuesday and Thursday  |  9:00am to 12:00 noon
September 6, 2022 to June 22, 2023
  • Open to persons 18 years or older
  • Maximum of 60 participants
  • Plastic shuttles are generally used (players supply their own shuttles)
  • Games are played within an easy-going atmosphere
  • Players rotate after each game or every 20 minutes depending on the number of participants that day
  • No singles play, drills or pre-arranged games
MID-SEASON FEE:  $140 (Effective January 2 - June 22, 2023)

INTERMEDIATE MORNING BADMINTON MEMBERSHIP
Looking for a more competitive organized play but don’t have a partner to play with? Our intermediate morning membership is great for anyone looking to play a higher level of Badminton with skill levels ranging from intermediate to advance. This program uses the play board to create 20 minutes rotating matches.

Monday and Wednesday  |  9:00am to 12:00pm
September 7, 2022 to June 21, 2023
  • Open to persons 18 years or older
  • Maximum of 60 participants
  • Feather shuttles are primarily used (players supply their own shuttles)
  • Matches are competitive in nature with players interested in improving their skills
  • Players rotate after each game or every 20 minutes depending on the number of participants that day
  • No singles play, drills or pre-arranged games
MID-SEASON FEE:  $140 (Effective January 2 - June 21, 2023)

AFTERNOON BADMINTON MEMBERSHIP
Great membership for intermediate and advanced players who want to improve their Badminton skills through practice drills and pre-arranged games. Matches are more competitive in nature and can be both doubles and singles play.  This program is best played when joining with a training partner. 

Monday to Thursday |  12:00pm to 4:00pm
September 6, 2022 to June 22, 2023
  • Open to persons 18 years or older
  • Maximum of 60 participants
  • Feather shuttles are primarily used (players supply their own shuttles)
  • Matches are competitive in nature with players interested in improving their skills
  • Training/practice, Pre-arranged games and Singles matches may be played where courts are available.
MID-SEASON FEE:  $245 (Effective January 2 - June 22, 2023) ​

PLAYMAKER BADMINTON MEMBERSHIP
Great Membership option for individuals looking to join by themselves or with a friend. Sit back and relax and let Club Pro Mike Bitten organize fun matches for you. All skill levels welcome!

Tuesday and Thursday nights  |  8:00pm to 11:00pm
September 6, 2022 to June 22, 2023
  • Open to persons 18 years or older
  • Maximum of 55 participants
  • Feather shuttles used only (players must supply their own shuttles)
  • The “playmaker” (normally badminton Pro Mike Bitten) sets games at the right competitive level for each player
  • Matches are 20 minutes in duration, after which new games are organized
  • The intent of the program is to promote interaction between social and intermediate players during evening hours
  • Doubles games are played at all times under the direction of Mike Bitten or his designate
  • Everyone enjoys equal time on the courts
Season FEE:  $380  

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED EVENING BADMINTON MEMBERSHIP
Great evening membership for competitive tournament players interested in a more challenging games. This program uses the play board to create 20 minutes rotating matches.

New for 2022-2023 – A dedicated Monday/Wednesday volunteer committee has been created to focus on fair play, fair use of the play board, equitable playtime and challenging games each evening.

Monday and Wednesday nights  |  8:00pm to 11:00pm
September 7, 2022 to June 21, 2023
  • Open to players 18 years or older
  • Maximum of 55 participants
  • Feather shuttles used only (players must supply their own shuttles)
  • Games are 20 minutes in duration, after which new games are set up
  • Doubles games are played at all times with all members mixing
  • No pre-arranged games, drills or singles play

Individuals must be of the intermediate/advance skill level to register for this membership. If you are unsure if your skill level will suit this time please reach out to our Badminton Professional for additional information or an assessment. Individuals who do not meet the required skill level will be provided a full refund of registration and will work with the Badminton Professional to find a more suitable time-slot. 
Season FEE:  $380 

YOUTH Badminton Membership Options - NEW Jr. HP Tryouts

SATURDAY FUNDAMENTAL TRAINING
Ages 8-17 - RABC's Junior FUNdamental Training is designed to advance junior members beyond the recreational level.  This program runs September 10, 2022 to April 1, 2023. Try outs are not required.
Group 1 – Developmental players ages 8-11 years
Saturdays, 9:00-10:00 am
FEE: $620 

Group 2 – Developmental players ages 12-14 years
Saturdays, 10:00-11:00 am
FEE: $620 

Group 3 – Developmental players ages 13-17 years
Saturdays 11:00 am-12:00 pm

​Tryouts for the 2023-2024 season will run on Saturday May 13 between 9:00am to 12:00pm. ​Coach Javier will be in contact with you once we have received all interested players' forms to confirm your time.

 RABC’s Junior High performance Training is designed for advanced junior members at the District, Provincial or National level. Mike bitten - head professional
Mike Bitten – Head Professional

The RA Centre’s Badminton Professional, Mike Bitten, was a 1986 and 1990 Commonwealth Games Silver medalist and competed in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He has won a record eight Canadian Men’s Doubles championships in his career and was ranked 12th in the world in 1992.
​
Apart from his playing abilities, Bitten has an extensive background in coaching and is certified as a Level 3 coach by the Coaching Association of Canada.
Javier Montes - Coach
​Javier Montes - Coach

Javier graduated from the Physical Education and Sport Program at the University of Granada (Spain) in 2003, with a specialization in racquets sports, and more specifically in Badminton. Since then, he has been working with kids and adults of all levels.

As a player, under the supervision of Zhang Xiaoping (national Spanish team coach) he won many provincial titles and he was part of the Spanish National Team, playing at both the national and international level. 

Javier is a Certified Badminton Coach in both Europe and Canada. He worked as an Assistant Coach at the Provincial Badminton Training Centre in Granada for 5 years, and he has been working at the RA Centre with our High Performance Junior Group for the past years. He is known for creating champions!
​
He has all the experience, abilities and enthusiasm that you need to develop your skills in badminton, from the beginner to the international level. With Javier as a coach, you will not only improve your game, but you will also have a great time on the court and you’ll want to come back for more!
