​Welcome to the Members section of the RA Gun Club (RAGC). Here, you will find information surrounding the Club Council, safety rules and schedule information.

All Gun Club members must book their visit in advance.
Please refer to the Range Booking information for available shooting times and complete details including booking procedures and step-by-step instructions on how to reserve your session through the RA's on-line registration system (PlayRA).

Important Notes - Please read
Junior Members
  1. New Junior members must attend a Tuesday evening Rifle Safety Course on one of the designated Tuesday nights before they can participate in the Sunday program; and
  2. Returning Juniors may come to the Sunday Junior times without this prerequisite if they have completed the internal rifle safety course within the past 2 years.  Returning members must re-take the safety course if they have not been an active member in the past 2 years.
HANDGUN Activities Definitions & ISSF High Performance times
Handgun Activities Definitions
  • Handgun – General Handgun, all allowed calibers; normally 10 min relays.
  • ISSF Handgun – ISSF Standard Pistol and Centre fire Pistol relays will be run. ISSF shooting is done one handed. Calibers include .22lr – .38 (no magnum/high power loads). 9mm shot one handed will be allowed.

  • RTS Program - The ISSF time slot can be used to shoot for Crest awards through the SFC RTS program. See the posters at the range for program details or check SFC. Contact the Handugn RTS Coordinator, Benoit Deschaies, at [email protected] or the Rifle RTS Coodinator, Gordon Smith.
  • Fifty-Meter Pistol (or Free Pistol) – Metro Toronto Free Pistol League Match night. Free pistol is an ISSF event and uses a single shot .22 caliber pistol and very challenging targets. For more information contact Soren Sorenson.
  • Sunday Air Gun – Subject to Range Officer (RO) availability; members interested in participating should contact Soren Sorenson.
  • Ottawa Valley Pistol League (OVPL) Night - These nights run ISSF half courses for each of Standard Pistol and Center-fire for practice for the League matches. All team members (and potential team members) are encouraged to come out to train. New members interested in joining the team can contact Benoit Deschaies.
    When the calendar indicates “OVPL Match” – these are closed nights as it is a home competition with a visiting area club. 
    Note: all club members are welcome to join the RA OVPL team.
  • ISSF High Performance Training – High Performance athletes training for Provincial, National, and International ISSF competitions. For more information contact Soren Sorenson.
  • IPSC Handgun – Action shooting sport; Come out on Saturday at 4:30pm, if you want to try it out. Contact Remi Doucet.
  • Intro to IPSC - Introduction to IPSC action shooting by use of IPSC targets at different distances and shooting techniques for fast accurate shot placement on multiple targets. This is intended for Hand Gun members that do not have their Black Badge qualification and are new to this kind of shooting discipline. Contact Bob Gowie.

ISSF High Performance times 

Wednesdays - 5pm to 7pm  &   Saturdays - 12pm to 3 pm
The High Performance time slot is defined as being solely intended for those shooters who are actively seeking to improve their abilities in the ISSF (International Sport Shooting Federation is the governing body for Olympic style target shooting) events and have a membership in either their a provincial sports organization (example, CSSA, or FTQ) or national sports organization, the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC); OR, represent the RAGC in local competitions, specifically the Ottawa Valley Pistol League.

Positions will be allocated for ISSF training time slot based on the following priorities:
  1. SFC or CSSA/FQT registered athletes training for International-National-Provincial level ISSF competitions (examples: Nationals, World Cups, Major Games, CISM championships, CAGP, LSBA, Winter Wrap-up, and Provincials);
  2. SFC or CSSA/FQT registered Free and Air pistol shooters preparing for Regional or Club level ISSF competitions (NCRRA, OVPL, Bill Szulga Memorial match, monthly RAGC Free and/or Air Pistol match, etc.);
  3. If there are positions available on the firing line, other club members agreeing to the format of the group shooting .22 and .177 caliber ONLY. Member must have a restricted firearms license and their own firearm, unless they have an RO to sponsor them.

  • ​LBSA Match
    On April 5 and 6, the RAGC hosted a match sanctioned by the Lakeshore Small Bore Association (LSBA), featuring a variety of .22 rimfire rifle, air rifle, and air pistol classes. Eligible rifles included any .22 rimfire model, with or without a scope; however, match-grade rifles were excluded to maintain a level playing field and encourage participation without requiring specialized equipment.

    ​RA Gun Club’s Remi Doucet Wins 2023 IPSC Canadian National Championships
     
    RA Gun Club member, Remi Doucet finished first overall at the 2023 International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Canadian National Championships in Selkirk, Manitoba, beating out a field of 438 elite competitors.  ​

    ​With this year’s win, Remi now holds National Championship titles in three Divisions: Production Division (2014); Standard Division (2018 & 2019); and Open Division (2023).  As a result, he is referred to as a “Triple Crown” National Champion in the IPSC world and he is the only Canadian to have accomplished this feat. He also holds the classification of Grand Master in each of these Divisions which is the highest proficiency classification level awarded to IPSC athletes.

    ​During the week of August 7-13, 2023, IPSC competitors from across Canada convened in Selkirk, Manitoba to compete in the 2023 IPSC National Championships. The IPSC Handgun Nationals is a very special event.  Once each year, IPSC athletes travel across our extremely vast country to celebrate our sport and determine champions.  No where else do competitors travel the distances Canadians do in order to compete against each other at national events.

    Practical shooting is the most popular dynamic shooting sport in the world, growing at an exceptional rate.  It is also one of the safest sports with the least number of accidents and injuries.  This is attributed to the rigid safety rules applied to all competitors.  Some of the top shooters are able to draw their handgun from its holster, and fire 6 shots in under 1.5 seconds.

    This year’s Nationals consisted of 18 stages which involved obstacles that needed to be overcome.  These included things such as moving targets, standing targets, metal plates, and a great many different “set-up” scenarios. A good example was stage 11 titled “Date Night”.  Competitors had to start this course of fire sitting with their shoulders rested on the back of a bench and their hands resting on their knees.  When the start signal sounded, competitors stood up, drew their handgun and engaged targets that were strategically placed behind obstacles, to obscure the competitors sightline, and engaged two rapidly swinging metal plates and two metal poppers, all the while moving laterally through the shooting area to be able to see around the barriers obscuring the sightline to the targets.  

    ​Scores for each competitor are calculated using a formula based on the total score of hits divided by the time it takes a competitor to complete the course of fire.  This is known as the “Hit Factor”. Given the level of competitiveness scores are factored to 4 decimal points. The competitor with the highest hit factor gets all the available points while other competitors are given points based on their hit factor percentage compared to the winner.  This scoring system makes the competitors strive for the highest accuracy in the shortest amount of time. At the end of the match all competitor scores from each stage are tallied and the winner is declared. 

    There are several ways to secure a spot to shoot the Nationals.  A competitor can be awarded a registration code (which guarantees a spot to compete) by qualifying through a provincial IPSC Section, such as IPSC Ontario.  This involves competing in at least two Level 3 qualifying matches and being selected through a provincial ranking.  After the provincial teams are identified the remaining spots available are filled through an on-line registration process which begins at a specified time and date. Given the demand to compete in the Nationals, on-line registration usually fills up within a couple of minutes. The only other way to secure a spot is through sponsorship of the match or through the benevolence of the Match Director should extraordinary circumstances support.  

    During the qualifying period for the 2023 Nationals, through the IPSC Ontario Team Qualifying Program, Remi and his wife were welcoming a new addition to their family. As such, the opportunity to secure a spot on the provincial team was eclipsed by a higher calling. Given Remi’s standing in the IPSC community, the membership of the RA Gun Club, with the support of RA management, explored options to secure Remi a spot to compete.  During discussions with the Match Director of the 2023 Nationals, the circumstances that restricted Remi from securing a spot through the IPSC Ontario Team qualifying process were explained and the Match Director awarded Remi with a registration code. Like the adage goes, “the rest was history”.

    Join us in congratulating Remi in his fourth National title win and wishing him the best as he prepares to compete in the 2024 National Championships in Peterborough, Ontario and the 2025 IPSC World Shoot (an Olympic Level event that has Olympic observer status) in South Africa. ​
    September 2024
    Women's Day on the Range
    On September 7 the RA hosted a Woman’s Day at the Range and as always it was a great success with 20 women participating in the event. What made it even more exciting was the fact that one of the Range Officers (George Kozoriz) arranged to have The 1984 Shooting Gold medalist Linda Thom attend and show the participants see her Gold Medal. It will be hard to top this experience at future events. Linda was pleased to be invited and would like to attend more Woman’s Day events.

    ​Optical Challenge
    On November 18th and 30th the Handgun Section had an Optical Challenge. David Stone won the 9mm category and J.P. MacDonald won the 22 calibre part of the competition. Thank you to everyone who competed and congratulations to the winners!

    ​Handgun Challenge
    The Club had its annual Handgun Challenge from September 30th to October 2nd. We would like to congratulate the winners and runners up for their excellent aim! Thank you to everyone who participated. We are looking forward to the next challenge!

    IPSC Match
    Over the February 14th weekend the RAGC held a IPSC Match which saw 70 competitors registered and 37 NROI Range Officers who helped officiate the match. Thank you to all of the competitors and Range Officers for a great weekend!
